CCSD PARENT SURVEY

Dear Moultrie Families,

The Charleston County School District is asking our parents to take a short

survey to provide us with valuable information to improve our school and

the district. Part of our purpose and mission at Moultrie is to build

positive relationships and communications with our community to increase

our students' achievement and experience in middle school and ensure

that students are ready for high school and beyond. The previous survey

provided us with valuable information and we have made changes to increase

our parental satisfaction.

Please take a few minutes to complete this survey. We had less than 20% of

our parents take the survey in the winter and the more data, feedback, and

input we have the better we can work to make Moultrie the best middle

school!

The survey is anonymous and the feedback will help us better support

students and achieve excellence across the district.

Thank you for taking the time to complete this short survey!

Moultrie On the Move!

Moultrie revved up physical activity by participating in SC Walk to School Day. Students walked to school from two park and walk locations.  Bus and car riders participated by walking laps around Jasper Green when they arrived at school. Mayor Billy Swails of Mt Pleasant, the Boeing Center for Children's Wellness team, and representatives from the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments walked with the students -- some even dressed up as fruits and vegetables! Snacks and water were donated for the event, and East Cooper Regional Medical Center assisted by providing 'no uniform' stickers for participating students. Nurse Nancy Baker was the main organizer of this event.

Moultrie Middle School's month of wellness also included hosting a community walk and a fun 5K walk/run that took place on St. Patrick's Day for the students and their families. This "March to Wellness" utilized the safe routes map that our Wellness Committee created with help from the Town of Mt Pleasant and Charleston County Parks and Recreation Department.

Moultrie also hosted a bike safety assembly for sixth grade students. Local police personnel, a bike shop, safety videos, and a helmet demonstration by a League of American Bicyclists League certified instructor provided students with the skills they need to bike to school safely.

Moultrie Middle School, along with our business partners, has officially become a GOLD partner with the SC SRTS Resource Center by implementing so many physical activities and safety initiatives!

KEEP MOVING MOULTRIE!

South Carolina Coach of the Year- Shilo Tisdale

Moultrie's Coach Tisdale named
South Carolina's Coach of the Year

Coach Shilo Tisdale was named the South Carolina State Coach of the Year, Southeast Regional High School Coach of the Year, and was a candidate for the National Coach of the Year.

He is one of two physical education teachers here at Moultrie Middle.  He is also the head coach of the Wando Boys Varsity Soccer Team.

He has had a successful team each year with the Wando Warriors always advancing to the Lower State finals. In 2011, Wando won the state championship.  "To be one of eight national finalists is a huge accomplishment and I'm sure there are other coaches who have many more years of experience and many more accomplishments than I do," said Coach Tisdale.

Coach Tisdale exemplifies the Moultrie Spirit in all he does.  He is a valued member of the Moultrie family and is highly thought of by both faculty and students.

We are soooooo proud of you Coach Tisdale!

Moultrie's nurse named state's best!

NANCY BAKER:
South Carolina School RN of the Year

At the South Carolina Annual School Nurse Conference on Friday, January 20, 2012, the state’s Department of Health and Environmental Control and Department of Education presented the South Carolina School Registered Nurse of the Year award to Nurse Nancy Baker of Moultrie Middle School.  The award publicly recognizes the outstanding contributions by an RN currently practicing as a school nurse.

Nurse Baker, a Nationally Certified School Nurse, is described by community and supervisors as being an insightful, caring, and empathetic professional. She has worked in CCSD for 18 years and is perceived by her colleagues to be a pioneer in school nursing and a mentor, who has helped develop some of the district’s procedures and who has implemented nationally-proven health care practices.

Here at Moultrie Middle School, Nurse Baker maintains a strong community presence and works with local partners to meet the needs of her students and fellow employees.  She led the school’s recent DHEC flu clinics and continuously encourages members of the school community to participate in health-focused events and contests. Through grants and donations, she has earned playground equipment and incentive prizes for health initiatives. She is currently working with Charleston County Parks and Recreation and Charleston County Tourism for a formal playground development project specific to her student population. Nurse Baker has secured small prizes from businesses to reward students and staff for their participation in Zumba, tennis, Pilates, yoga and a walking group. She also developed Weight Watchers at Work and organized group meetings at the school. She educates staff, patients and families by raising awareness of breast cancer, autism, diabetes, and other wellness topics. She works closely with various organizations including Susan B. Komen, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Autism, MUSC’s Boeing Center for Children’s Wellness (formerly known as the MUSC Lean Team), Louie’s Kids, and the Charleston County Medical Society.

Congratulations Nurse Baker!  Your dedication and creativity have helped everyone in our state recognize what we at Moultrie have known for years -- you are the BEST!

From the Principal

Dear Moultrie Families,

The end of the school year is upon us and everyone is busily getting ready for our Spring Testing season.  As you are all aware, all students will be taking the state PASS assessments next week.  The schedule is as follows:
Tues. May 8th-English Language Arts for all students
Wed. May 9th-Mathematics for all students
Thurs. May 10th-Science for 7thgrade; Science or Social Studies for 6thand 8thgrade
Fri. May 11th-  Social Studies for 7thgrade
Our students and teachers have been working hard all year and we know that our students are ready to show us what they know on these important tests.  Parents can help by making sure that students are well rested, have a good breakfast, and come to school ready and confident to tackle testing.  We have already seen tremendous growth and development this year as evidenced by the MAP tests and know students will work hard next week.  Thank you for helping us emphasize the importance of this time.

6thand 7thgrade students will also be taking the CCSD Grade Level Assessments (GLA) on Monday May 14thin their normal Math and ELA classes.  All the assessments (MAP, PASS, and the GLA) will be considered in placement for next school year.  More information about placement can be found on the website at http://moultrie.ccsdschools.com/

A great deal of information can be found on the website including a calendar with the myriad of events, concerts, and activities taking place in May.  Of particular note are our end of the year awards ceremonies:
6thgrade-Thursday May 31stat 9 am in the cafeteria
7thgrade-Wednesday May 30that 9 am in the cafeteria
8thgrade-Wednesday May 30th-Class Night at the Wando Performing Arts Center.  8thgrade students will be bringing home information and it can also be found on the website.

Also on the website are grade level reading lists and supply list for next year along with other important updates for the coming school year.  Save the dates!  August 14- Fact and Fee and August 22- First day back for students

Final report cards will be mailed home on June 11th.  If you receive a financial obligation form instead of a report card, you will need to pay fees at Moultrie Middle School any time between 8am and 2pm Monday through Thursday during our summer hours.  Once the fees are paid, we will provide you with your students report card.  If you would like to check on any unpaid fees before the end of school, please call the school and we will gladly assist you.

Last week, the PTA helped us celebrate our teachers and thank them for all the hard work and dedication to our students every day.  Special thanks go out to everyone that showered our teachers and staff with goodies, food, and special tokens of appreciation.  We are blessed with the hardest working PTA around and the entire Moultrie community is appreciative of their time, efforts, and amazing energy!  We have a wonderful new slate of PTA board members (some new and some veterans) and we are looking forward to and already planning for another great year.

This is our last Moultrie Matters for the 2011-2012 school year and I would like to thank everyone for your hard work and dedication this year.  We wish our 8thgrade students and parents the best of luck as you head off to high school and know that Moultrie is always here for you.  On behalf of the entire Moultrie family, we wish you and your family a safe and fun filled summer.  Dont forget to READ, READ, READ!

With Warmest Regards,
